Historic Haile Homestead at Kanapaha Plantation, built in 1856 by enslaved black craftsman, is one of the few antebellum homes in North Central Florida.

The Haile family, from South Carolina, established a 1500 acre Sea Island cotton plantation they named Kanapaha. The 6,200 square foot mansion later became the site of house parties attended by some of Gainesville’s most distinguished citizens. Haile Homestead is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Haile family had an unusual obsession: they wrote on the walls of their home. Don’t miss the "Talking Walls," over 12,500 words written by family and friends in almost every room and closet. The walls will speak of joys and sorrows of more than a century ago. Also of note is the exhibit on the Enslaved Builders of the Plantation.
