Just in time for Halloween, the Lubee Bat Fest in Gainesville, Florida is fast becoming an incredible annual event that's fun AND educational for kids of all ages.

Well just in time for Halloween….and for this harried Mom of two grade schoolers looking to fill our calendar with fun activities during our llllooonnnnggg four-dayGator Homecoming Weekend…the Lubee Bat Fest comes to the rescue!!
The Lubee whatee? you ask. Well, I asked too because actually I’ve never been either.
So based on my in-depth research (okay, I read the www.Lubee.org website…which is really, really interesting) and “interviewed” several of my friends and colleagues who’ve been and they all say –Go!! Go!!! Go!! “It’s really cool” was also a consistent comment.
From what I’ve garnered…the kids and I will be overwhelmed by the incredible number of bats as well as the sheer size of the wingspan of the fruit bat guys…with an average five-foot spread, it’s at least the size of a healthy sixth grader or Dr. Ruth standing on her tip-toes. Impressive.
And when not gawking at our new bat buddies, we’re sure to be busy working on craft creations and listening to how important bats truly are to our ecology. I knew that bats were good for insect and little rodent (eeeekkk!) control, but I really had no recollection that they were excellent pollinators, ala butterflies and bees. That is really cool.
So This Saturday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. our dance card is full with all things bat. Thank you Lubee for helping this mom be a little less batty!
